Lemonback - Hugs the walls in the western section of the coral basin caves.Gupper - In the caves along the edges of the chasm.Thresher - Commonly in the large, open central cavern.Nightfish Sire - Exclusively found in the Nightfish Sire cave.Stankfin - Usually found in the Bay caves but can be found in other sections west of the reef wall as well.Cavefish - Common, found in most parts of the caverns west of the reef wall. Also found in deep open ocean, and comes to the surface at night. Nightfish - Occasionally found in the Nightfish Sire cave, following Nightfish Sire around in groups of two or three.Glacier - In the lower sections of the coral basin caves.Snoutfish - In the upper sections of the Caverns west of the chasm, but may also follow other fish to the surface.Bombat - Lines the walls of the central caverns, can be lured out with bombs or rocks.Yin - In the open water of the chasm, at Cavern level, in a school of three.Yang - In a small cave directly below the Bay, in a school of three.Crystalfish - In the very deep section of the coral basin caves, usually solitary.Jackfish - In the lower sections of the coral basin caves, in small groups.Rana - In the upper sections of the coral basin caves.Gnawer - In the upper sections of the coral basin caves. The Caverns are home to a range of rare fish, some of which come up to the surface at night and during storms. The bottom of the empty caves is open and drops down below map range. Located east of the coral basin caves and connected to them through a series of tunnels, but distinguished by a complete lack of most fish and a large open area in the middle. Also called the dark caves due to the fact that sonar does not work here. These caves are located deep below and to the west of the coral basin, and contain the solitary Lemonback. Requires the Explorer hat to fully explore. Sonar does not work in this area, or in any point further east. Largely separate from the chasm to the west, although there are several very narrow tunnels that connect it. Also called the Reef caves, accessed through a narrow opening in the seafloor of the coral basin. There is a small cave in the west wall that connects it to the central cavern.Ĭoral basin caves. Theoretically one of the deepest areas in the game. It goes down to maximum depth, although the walls continue down beyond the bounds of the map. The chasm is a huge trench in the seafloor, immediately west of the reef wall. Sometimes called the ocean cleft or the basin (not to be confused with the coral basin). A small chamber west of the central cavern, below a rocky outcrop. Bonefish are found on the floor here.Ĭave Shark's lair. The floor of the central cavern sits at the maximum depth of the Master Rod without upgrades. It also opens into the Cave Shark's lair. It is located to the east of the Bay caves and the Nightfish Sire cave, and west of the chasm. The largest internal section of the western Caverns, a semicircular chamber with a large opening in the ceiling. Directly above the entrance to this cave, the Explorer hat can be found.Ĭentral cavern. This is a single large, circular cavern usually filled with 3-4 Nightfish Sire, and occasionally Nightfish. Below and slightly to the east of the Bay caves, the Nightfish Sire cave can be found. It is necessary to move forwards and backwards to successfully pull fish out of the Bay caves, and so requires the use of a boat. The highest region of the Caverns, and easily reached with a Sinker lure. Located directly below the player's starting area, the Bay.

Much like a riveting game of chess, every decision has consequences.Įxperimentation and gameplay freedom are beautifully celebrated in Phantom Dust. Understanding which skills counter or defend against your adversaries' attacks is critical to your survival. Four players square off in cleverly designed arenas hoping to be the final combatant standing. However, a significant component of Phantom Dust's longevity lies in exhilarating player-versus-player showdowns. In the single-player offering, this means battling surreal robotic enemies and towering monstrosities. The Cream of the Crap doesn’t simply bash bad games in a technical level, it bashes bad corporate decisions (the biggest evil in the gaming industry) just as much. The core loop of Phantom Dust revolves around crafting thoughtful arsenals designed to outwit or overpower your opponents. After cancelling the original Phantom Dust remake due to excessive corporate interference, they gave poor Code Mystics the ungrateful task of delivering an already promised remaster without giving them the necessary assets to actually do so. If there’s anyone to blame here, it’s Microsoft. Given this complete mess, the developers weren’t able to do much besides upscaling the game’s resolution and, well, adding god damn microtransactions to it (I still can’t believe they actually did this).īefore you rush to the comment section and slam yours truly for unfairly bashing the poor developers, I know it’s not their fault. And that was yet another problem: the remaster was announced without the developers being able to actually access the game’s original source code, therefore they had to hack it and reverse engineer it, just like people do with illegal ROMs in emulation websites, in order to be able to take a look at the assets and data files. Microsoft didn’t give up on trying to bring Phantom Dust back from the dead, though, and decided to announce a remaster of the game, instead of a remake, after the original cancellation. As it seemed, Microsoft kept asking for more and more features to be added to the reboot, while maintaining the original budget, not adding a single cent, which made the game development nearly impossible. Microsoft eventually decided to cancel the project, a decision that resulted in the closure of the developer working on the game. It was originally planned as a full-fledged remake/reboot of the franchise, a way to bring back this older franchise from the glorious OG Xbox into the current generation of gaming, as well as using its multiplayer component as a way to take advantage of the growing eSports scene. Yes, we all know the story behind the failed attempt to actually remake Phantom Dust. Granted, the gameplay is interesting, but it doesn’t hold up to nowadays standards… Granted, you can get abilities as good as those being sold during the single-player campaign, but for crying out loud, this just feels wrong. Microtransactions for a game from 2004? Who the hell thought that was a good idea? Sure, we are getting the game for free, but adding paid DLC for a game that was complete content-wise back when it was first released is, for lack of a better word, insulting. Excuse me for a second, I need to use the toilet… Everything that was wrong with the game 13 years ago is still here, and given how far we’ve come in terms of gaming, some of those issues are even more apparent this time around.ĭid the developers add anything to this new version? Yes they did. Gameplay-wise, the game still maintains everything I mentioned in the previous paragraph. No new lighting effects, no improved texturing, no new shadow effects, not a single framerate improvement. This version is nothing more than a direct port, with no visual improvements other than its new resolution during normal gameplay, as the FMVs are still in the original resolution, looking quite ugly in the process. To put in simple terms, the Xbox One version of Phantom Dust isn’t a remaster, like Microsoft is trying to convince you in the Xbox Live store. Couldn’t even be bothered to upscale the FMVs? Unexpectedly, this one idea propels Priam into a multitude of other changes. Even though his beautiful wife Hecuba and the rest of his family have reservations about his desire to confront Achilles, Priam is resolved in taking a ‘chance', rather than achieving nothing by remaining within the walls of his home. Priam’s determination to change how he is remembered – from just another king leading a regal life to a hero who went to extraordinary lengths to regain his child – demonstrates that change is within our grasp. Malouf demonstrates that it is never too late to change one’s ways. Somax’s confidence and pride in his identity is starkly contrasted with Priam’s pursuit for an identity transformation. The name ‘Somax’ is associated with many significant events in his life including his marriage and family, yet the new unfamiliar name strips him of this identity. He secretly notes his unhappiness with this name appointment, since he is ‘Somax, not Idaeus'. Meanwhile, Somax is designated as the king’s herald, with the name Idaeus. His search for Hector is also a search for himself, to reinvent who he is and how he wishes others to remember him. However, the death of Hector is a catalyst for Priam as he realises that he needs to become a ‘father’ rather than the ‘king’ he had become so accustomed to. It appears as though Priam has been unhappy with his identity for quite some time, is physically weak, and feels as though he cannot protect his kingdom as efficiently as he used to. As the leader of Troy for many decades, Priam has always viewed himself as a king. Ransom explores who we are and what it means to have an identity. īy the way, to download a PDF version of this blog for printing or offline use, click here! Although he is mentioned throughout Ransom, he makes his first appearance at the end of the novel where he savagely slaughters an old and defenseless Priam in an effort to avenge his father’s death. This results in Achilles challenging Hector to a battle, resulting in Hector’s death and Achilles’ triumph. During a battle between the Trojans and the Greeks, Hector kills Patroclus. He is kind, brave and noble without any cruel intentions, unlike his rival Achilles. Hector is Priam’s son and also the leader of the Trojan army. However, after hearing Priam’s sentimental reasons, she shows support and urges him to first share his plan with their family and the kingdom’s council before he departs. She is initially uncertain of Priam’s vision to save Hector. Hecuba is Priam’s beloved wife and mother of Hector. Somax’s other mule who carries the cart to Achilles’ camp. She accompanies Priam and Somax on their journey to the Greek camp where Achilles resides. Although Somax is far from royalty, his great deal of affection for his daughter-in-law and granddaughter teaches Priam about love, family and life. He often engages in useless chatter and performs daily activities in a way that is foreign to the king. His simple and plain presence is contrasted with Priam’s royal status. He is chosen to escort Priam to Achilles. Somax is representative of the ‘common man’ in Ransom. Achilles loses his sense of humanity as he is possessed by his rage, hatred and grief. He then drags Hector’s dead body along the walls of Troy for the next 11 days. Hector murdered Patroclus and, as a result, Achilles takes revenge by killing Hector. The death of Patroclus, his closest companion and hinted lover, drives Achilles to insanity. AchillesĪchilles is known as the greatest warrior of the Greeks. After many decades as king of Troy, Priam is determined to reinvent how he will be remembered as a king who performed an extraordinary act of heroism in order to save his beloved son. Though the royal family is doubtful of his plan to save Hector, Priam is resolute and insists that he needs to try his best to confront Achilles as a father, rather than as king. His vision is the catalyst for the novel’s events, for his journey is one of learning and self-development. After the death of his son Hector, Priam envisions himself in plain clothing, riding a plain cart to Achilles who is effectively holding Hector ransom. As a child, his sister Hesione saved him from slavery, and had his named changed from Podarces to Priam, the name meaning ‘the ransomed one’ or ‘the price paid'. Boas lived and worked closely with the Inuit peoples on Baffin Island, and he developed an abiding interest in the way people lived.īoas’s ideas of culture being a relatively autonomous totality with interrelated parts built on the legacy of Johann Herder an eighteenth-century supporter of the French Revolution and the Declaration of the Rights of Man as well as a critic of the German nobility. The first of many ethnographic field trips, Boas gathered his notes to write his first monograph titled The Central Eskimo (1888). In 1883, Boas traveled to Baffin Island, the largest island of Canada, to conduct geographic research on the impact of the physical environment on native Inuit populations. (Patterson, 2001) Boas thoroughly believed that individuals had the right to challenge “the authority of tradition” in ways that free us from the errors of the past” and that “prevent individualism from outgrowing its legitimate limits and becoming intolerable egotism.” (Boas, 1938 as quoted by Patterson, 2001) He held a lifetime commitment to freedom of thought. He is famed for applying the scientific method to the study of human cultures and societies, a field which was previously based on the formulation of grand theories around subjective knowledge. Like many such pioneers, Boas trained in other disciplines during his education, including languages, geography, psychophysics, and philosophy, and was influenced by neo-Kantian thinkers who gave expression to liberal and socialist ideals in the oppressive political climate of Bismarck’s Germany during the 1870s and 1880s. (Willis, 1975 as quoted by Patterson, 2001) Professionalism acted as a brake on Boas’s political activism, at least until his later years. These commitments were more fundamental than the professionalization of anthropology, although professionalism was sometimes strong enough to clash successfully with Boas’s politics. (Patterson, 2001) One of his biographers noted that his vision of anthropology was shaped in part by his political commitments: Being a political radical, a foreigner to America and a Jew, Boas felt a profound impact from being a part of this transformation. This shift, in turn, provided credentials and certification to the next generation of anthropologists, and was occurring during a period characterized by extreme discrimination against people of color, immigrants, women, and the poor. German-born Franz Boas (1858-1942), often referred to as the “Father of American Anthropology”, played an important role in professionalizing American anthropology and shifting the profession’s center from the federal government and private museum to the university. We will cover each of their backgrounds, their greatest contributions, and their overall influence on the discipline of anthropology. Both of these influential researchers are of great importance to our examination of the history of anthropology and I will discuss both of them in this paper. Margaret Mead was one such later scholar, whose research in the Pacific Islands proved to be enlightening on the nature versus nurture debate, challenging the assumptions of the universal stages of human growth and development, and on childhood and socialization. Indeed, the 20th Century was pivotal to the development of modern cultural anthropology.įranz Boas was an instrumental American scholar in the founding of the discipline of anthropology, and paved the way for later scholars to further define the goals and range and to broaden the study of culture. Scholars such as Ruth Benedict, Eric Wolf, and Margaret Mead were among this group of anthropologists who expanded on the contributions of the fathers. (Patterson, 2001) By the mid-1900s, several key scholars emerged and further defined the scope of the discipline. These founders of the science made substantial contributions to the growth of the discipline. Bronislaw Malinowski, who conducted fieldwork in the Trobriand Islands and taught in England, developed this method, and Franz Boas promoted it. However, by the 20th century most socio-cultural anthropologists turned to the study of ethnography, in which an anthropologist actually lives among another society and participates in the culture while conducting scientific research. In the nineteenth-Century, ethnology, which involves the organized comparison of human societies, and relied on second hand materials collected by missionaries, explorers, or colonial officials, earned the ethnologists their current label of “arm-chair anthropologists” developed. Prosodists seldom explicitly state what they are marking in their scansions. Scansions which take account of more levels of metrical degree than two, or intonation, or the timing of syllables are all guilty of overspecification. Strictly speaking, scansion marks which syllables are metrically prominent – i.e. But all such efforts exceed the boundary of strict metrical analysis, moving into descriptions of linguistic rhythm, and thus serve to blur or dissolve the distinction between meter and rhythm. It is natural to want to enrich scansion with other kinds of analyses which capture more of the phonological and syntactic structure of the line. Since meter is a system of binary oppositions in which syllables are either marked or unmarked (long or short stressed or unstressed), a binary code is all that is necessary to transcribe it. Brogan issues a stern warning about the temptations of overly detailed scansion: Ictus refers to the position within a line that is experienced as a beat, or to the syllable that fills it. Thus a syllable, regardless of its level of stress, that realizes a beat is ictic and a syllable, regardless of its level of stress, that does not is nonictic. These phenomena are called "promotion" and "demotion". This can most easily be understood through the principle of relative stress: an unstressed syllable between 2 even slightly weaker syllables may be perceived as a beat and the reverse is true of a stressed syllable between 2 even slightly stronger syllables. A perfectly regular line of iambic pentameter may have anywhere from 2 to 9 stresses, but it is still felt to exhibit 5 pulses or beats. However, marking stress is not the same as marking meter. All other aspects of language are present, indeed they are vital to the rhythm of the verse but they are not ordered by the meter. In English (and in many modern languages) the language is ordered by syllabic stress. It is an ordering of language by means of an extremely limited subset of its characteristics. Lewis observes, "f the scansion of a line meant all the phonetic facts, no two lines would scan the same way". The rhythm of language is infinitely varied all aspects of language contribute to it: loudness, pitch, duration, pause, syntax, repeated elements, length of phrases, frequency of polysyllabic words. To understand any form of scansion, it is necessary to appreciate the difference between meter and rhythm. There is even a debate among scholars as to what systems were inherited from the Greek and Roman poetry. Systems of scansion, and the assumptions (often tacit or even subconscious) that underlie them, are so numerous and contradictory that it is often difficult to tell whether differences in scansion indicate opposed metrical theories, conflicting understandings of a line's linguistic character, divergent practical goals, or whether they merely constitute a trivial argument over who has the "better ear" for verse. Over the years, many systems have been established to mark the scansion of a poem. In both cases, the meter often has a regular foot. In English poetry, they are based on the different levels of stress placed on each syllable. In classical poetry, these patterns are quantitative based on the different lengths of each syllable. ʃ ə n/ SKAN-shən, rhymes with mansion verb: to scan), or a system of scansion, is the method or practice of determining and (usually) graphically representing the metrical pattern of a line of verse. The challenge and my only complaint is Deja Vu simply lacks enough dancers and therefore quality dancers to make it a top recommendation for tourists. That combined with the low prices for the fully private VIP make Deja Vu Showgirls a good value. So, strippers in Las Vegas, set their own rules for touch and the ones at Deja Vu, like most in Vegas, are high contact. Many years ago, the Nevada Supreme Court ruled any law telling a dancer how much contact she could allow during a lap dance is unconstitutional. The dancers at Deja Vu are friendly and give a good lap dance with high contact.
